Hidden Expedition: Devil’s Triangle is a hidden object adventure game recently released by Focus Multimedia. After a pilot disappears and is presumed to be lost in Devil’s Triangle, the Hidden Exploration Adventure Team (HEAT) send their top explorer (that’s you) on a rescue mission using Seahawk. Seahawk is a refurbished submarine powered by the Bio-Coil fuel cell, an ultra-efficient, micro power source. However, the mission is interrupted when pirates steal the Bio-Coil so you have two objectives: find the missing pilot and recover the Bio-Coil. |

The hidden object puzzles are relatively straightforward, most often presenting you with a list of objects to find. Hints are available and the game offers two excellent advantages in this respect: firstly, if you click the name of the item you are looking for a silhouette of the item is shown. This is ‘free’ (i.e. you don’t use up any of your hints) and is extremely helpful, particularly in cases where there could be ambiguity about what you’re looking for (for example, a pipe could be of the metal variety or the smoking type). Secondly, if you do decide to use a hint, you can actually choose which object to use the hint on. This is a really good feature, especially if you’re stuck with just two or three objects to find but want to use your hint on the one that is (potentially) the most obscure. Other hidden object puzzles in the game will either ask you to find a certain number of items under a particular category (such as ‘5 things that fly’) or will ask you to look for related pairs (such as a paintbrush and palette or two pictures of cats). As you can’t specify an item to look for when using hints in these puzzles, a random object will be found for you. In terms of hints you are given a small number to use and once gone you must wait for your meter to build back up again before you are awarded with any more. However, the hint system is definitely sufficiently generous considering the difficulty of the puzzles. |

As well as offering hidden object puzzles, Hidden Expedition: Devil’s Triangle also requires you to interact with objects and solve problems or puzzles. For example, you may need to use a hammer on a nail or a crowbar on a box. One of my favourite challenges in the game is a hidden object puzzle which gives you a small number of objects to look for at a time and requires you to undertake certain tasks to obtain each set of items before moving on to the next part. So, for example, you would have to pick up a peeler in the first part but in the second part use that peeler to peel an apple and retrieve a worm. It’s a brilliant puzzle that integrates solving small problems with hidden object hunting perfectly. |

Hidden Expedition: Devil’s Triangle offers some absolutely wonderful illustrations. Locations and puzzle screens are always bright and eye-catching and objects are depicted with an excellent level of detail. The characters are also well depicted, again with detailed and eye-catching close ups. The cutscenes are similarly impressive, with strikingly colourful landscapes providing a brilliant backdrop to the game. |
